The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

How do SDG-interlinkages manifest themselves in national contexts and translate into financing savings?

About

The SDGs were not born in isolation. Understanding the interactions across social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development is essential to bridge financing gaps, overcome financing inequalities and funding shortfalls. Uncovering how SDGs interact and manifest themselves at the national level is key to maximize fiscal space, enhance public spending efficiency and sequence financing decisions while optimizing SDG impact. SDG interlinkages, however, are not static; rather they are in a constant state of flux and change. These interactions vary across time and space, both within and across national economies. Their magnitude is influenced by financing decisions, budget execution, the state of development and governance conditions.

Highlights

  • Jordan's economy exhibits a total of 1,432 interactions among measurable SDG indicators (57), with synergies outweighing trade-offs at a ratio of 4 to 1.

  • 70% of Jordan's SDG interlinkages follow global behavioural patterns described in the literature. The remaining 30% reflect country-specific idiosyncrasies.

  • SDGs 1 (poverty reduction), 6 (water efficiency), 8 (growth/employment), and 9 (manufacturing) serve as pathfinders catalyzing the delivery of other goals.

  • Budget lines that hold the most significant impact on SDG progress are capital expenditures in public health and current expenditures on manufacturing and infrastructure.

Interlinkages Mapping

The interactive mapping below provides unique insights into how SDG synergies manifest themselves in Jordan's country-specific contexts. The mapping is the outcome of a machine learning neural networks developed by ESCWA that provides behavioural insights on SDG patterns and trends, aiding data-analysis and decision making.

The traffic light representation of SDG targets reflects country-specific contexts. Green lines signify proven synergies, while red lines represent trade offs. Greyed out targets may result from either a lack of country-specific data, although interlinkages may still be applicable, or imply the absence of validated global interactions in the context of Jordan.
